Skip-the-line available Villa del Balbianello opening times, and when to go
Open days, hours, tour slots and the closures that catch out lake itineraries, with the December 2026 and January 2027 dates in full.
Villa del Balbianello is open every day except Monday and Wednesday from March to January, from 10:00 to 18:00, with last park entry at 17:00 and the last villa tour at 16:00. From November the day shortens to 10:00–17:00. December 2026 opens on 16 set dates, and January 2027 has only four open days before the winter closure. Guided tours of the interiors start from entry slots at 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 14:15 and 15:15, with the 15:15 slot dropped from November to January. Booking ahead is mandatory, and the tours fill days in advance even in late October. Below you will find every date, how the slots work, which season suits you, and what to do if your plans land on a closed day.
The regular season: open days and hours
From March to January the villa opens every day except Monday and Wednesday. In the regular season the gates open at 10:00 and close at 18:00. Last entry to the park is at 17:00, and the last villa tour is at 16:00.
Those two cut-offs are different things. Last park entry is the latest you can come into the garden. The last villa tour is the latest guided visit of the interiors. If the house is the reason you are coming, and for most people it is, plan around the tour time rather than the closing time.
The closures are strict. In October 2026, for example, the 19th, 21st, 26th and 28th are all unavailable, because they fall on Mondays and Wednesdays. Check the weekday of every date before you build a day around it.
Plan your arrival as well as your slot. The walk up from Lenno takes about 25 minutes, so for the 15:15 slot, the last of the day, leave the village by around 14:45. Your tour can start up to 60 minutes after your slot, so keep the rest of the afternoon loose.
November, December and January dates
In November the villa keeps the same open days but shortens its hours to 10:00–17:00. Last park entry moves to 16:00 and the last villa tour to 15:00.
December 2026 is different. The villa opens only on these dates: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 20, 22, 26, 27 and 29 December. That works out as Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and 24 and 25 December are not among them. Hours are 10:00–17:00, with last park entry at 16:00 and the last villa tour at 15:00.
January 2027 has just four open days: 2, 3, 5 and 6 January, from 10:00 to 17:00. Note that 6 January is a Wednesday and is open, the one exception to the usual Wednesday closure. After that the villa closes for the winter.
These late-year days suit a slower visit. With the last slot at 14:15 and the gates closing at 17:00, a midday slot leaves time for the garden before or after the house. Remember that the tour can start up to an hour after your entry time.
The winter closure and the 2027 reopening
The 2027 reopening date has not been published yet. As of mid-October 2026 no dates for March 2027 were on sale, so anyone quoting a firm spring date is guessing.
For a sense of the pattern, look at 2026. Before the regular season began, the villa opened at weekends in February (14, 15, 21, 22 and 28 February) and in early March (1, 7, 8 and 14 March). That is a guide to how the year can start, not a promise that 2027 will follow the same shape.
If you are planning a trip for late winter or early spring 2027, keep your Lake Como dates flexible until the calendar appears. Once it does, book promptly: early-season dates offer fewer open days to choose from.
If you are looking at early 2027, dates can only be booked once they are released. Until then, any date you see quoted for March 2027 or earlier is not a bookable date, however confident the source sounds.
Guided-tour slots and how they work
The guided tour of the villa's interiors runs from five entry slots in the regular season: 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 14:15 and 15:15. From November to January the slots run from 11:15 to 14:15, and the 15:15 slot is not offered.
The time you book is your entry time to the garden. Your exact tour start is given at the ticket office when your ticket is validated, and you may wait up to 60 minutes. That wait is not dead time. The garden, the terraces and the Loggia Durini are yours to explore at your own pace. A sensible order is the loggia and terraces first, then the house, then the rest of the garden afterwards if time allows.
The tour itself lasts about 50 minutes, in Italian or English, with no more than 16 people. Larger parties are split into separate groups with at least 15 minutes between them.
Timing rules are firm. Entry is only on the date and at the time booked. Arrive more than 30 minutes early and you will be asked to wait; arrive late and the visit is not guaranteed. Dates cannot be changed and tickets are non-refundable, so fix your plans before you book.
How far ahead to book
Booking is mandatory. There is no turning up and buying on the day: entry is by advance booking only, for a set date and time. Tickets are sold online only, and the time on yours is the time you are expected at the garden entrance.
The guided tours fill days ahead, even in late October. Book as soon as your Lake Como dates are settled, and treat the villa as the fixed point you plan the rest of the day around.
We book adult tickets (19 and over), tickets for ages 6–18, student tickets for ages 19–25 and a family ticket for two adults and two or more of their children aged 6–18. Children aged 0–5 go free and are added to your booking at no charge. We email your e-ticket once the booking is made.
A practical order of work: decide your Lenno day first, check it is not a Monday or a Wednesday, then choose the slot that fits your boat or drive. Earlier slots suit visitors crossing from Varenna or Bellagio; later slots suit those already staying in Lenno.
Choosing your season
Spring is when the garden comes back into growth after the winter closure, and the regular hours give you the full choice of tour slots. If you are coming early in the year, remember the reopening date is still to be announced. FAI's page also lists special openings between 6 April and 1 June, without further detail, so check the calendar again closer to your dates.
Summer is the season when the lake is at its liveliest. The hours are the same as in spring, but the walk up from Lenno is warmer. An earlier slot makes the climb easier and leaves the afternoon free for the water.
Autumn is our favourite. The woods on the point turn colour, as in the photograph at the top of this page, and October still has the full 10:00–18:00 day with all five slots. It is also when the tours fill days in advance, so do not leave it late.
From November the days are short. Hours end at 17:00, the 15:15 slot goes, and December and January open on set dates only. It is a quieter time, but you have fewer days and fewer slots to choose from.
Weather and the walk up
Allow for the approach. On foot from Lenno it is about 1 km and roughly 25 minutes uphill, partly on gravel. There is also a longer trekking path of about 2.5 km, around 45 minutes, for those with suitable shoes only. Neither suits pushchairs or people with reduced mobility. The alternative is a taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno, which is paid, not run by FAI and by reservation only.
Much of the visit is outdoors: the garden, the terraces and the loggia. Dress for the forecast and bring water on hot days. There is no café, though the bookshop sells water, soft drinks and small snacks. On a wet day the paths and terraces can be slippery, so wear shoes with good grip.
Travel light. Pushchairs, prams and bulky backpacks are not allowed inside, and there is no luggage storage. Baby carriers can be borrowed free. Dogs are welcome in the garden on a lead, but inside the villa only guide and assistance dogs are allowed.
Drivers need extra margin. The nearest paid car park is the Parcheggio Mercato on Via Comoedia in Lenno, with more parking on Via Diaz and Via Silvio Pellico. Traffic is heavy and parking is difficult, so add time before the walk up.
The Monday and Wednesday trap
Most Lake Como itineraries are built around the boats, and the central-lake route links Varenna, Bellagio and Lenno. It is easy to sketch a neat loop and only later notice that the Lenno day is a Monday or a Wednesday. On those days the villa is closed for the whole season. The rule holds from March to January, so it applies in high summer just as much as in autumn.
Plan the other way round. Choose a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday for the villa first, book the tour, and then fit Varenna and Bellagio around it. In December the choice narrows further to the set dates listed above.
If you are staying only one or two nights on the lake, check the weekdays before you book your hotel. A short stay that falls on a Monday and a Wednesday leaves no chance to see the house at all.
December needs its own check. The open dates fall on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only, so Thursdays are closed too. In January 2027, Wednesday 6 January is open while Monday 4 January is not.
If your dates fall on a closed day
First, look for room to move. Shifting your Lenno day by one day is usually enough, because the closures never fall on two days in a row. A Monday trip becomes a Tuesday or a Sunday; a Wednesday trip becomes a Tuesday or a Thursday. From November to January, check the listed dates rather than the weekday rule.
If your dates are truly fixed, use the closed day for Varenna or Bellagio, which the public boats link to Lenno, and return when the villa is open. If neither works, the honest answer is that this is a visit for another trip; there is no way into the interiors on a closed day.
Whatever you decide, settle the date before you book. Tickets are for one date and time only, cannot be moved and are non-refundable. Once your date is fixed, we book your tour and email your e-ticket.
One last check before you book: the time of year. From November to January there are fewer slots each day as well as fewer days, so a clash with a closed day leaves less room to rearrange. Build in a spare day if the villa is the reason for your trip.
